The ancient seat of learning where Lord Krishna and Balarama received their divine education from Guru Sandipani
Sandipani Ashram (also known as Sandipani Muni Ashram) is one of the most historically and spiritually significant sites in Ujjain. This ancient gurukul is revered as the place where Lord Krishna and his brother Balarama received their education under the guidance of their guru, Sage Sandipani, over 5,000 years ago.
According to the Mahabharata and various Puranas, Krishna and Balarama came to Ujjain (then known as Avanti) to study the Vedas, Upanishads, military arts, and various sciences under Sage Sandipani, who was a renowned scholar and teacher of that era. The ashram served as a premier center of learning, attracting students from across the Indian subcontinent.
The ashram complex features the sacred Sandipani Kund (a stepped water tank), where it is believed Krishna and Balarama used to bathe and perform their daily rituals. The Kund is fed by natural springs and is considered holy. Devotees take a dip here to purify themselves and seek blessings for knowledge and wisdom.
Today, the ashram serves as both a place of worship and an educational institution, continuing the ancient tradition of Vedic learning. The site includes temples dedicated to Lord Krishna, Guru Sandipani, and other deities, along with a museum displaying ancient artifacts and manuscripts.
