About Mahakaleshwar

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, located in the ancient city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The temple is uniquely Dakshinamukhi (facing south), which is believed to bestow special powers and protection to devotees.

The temple's sanctum houses the self-manifested (Swayambhu) lingam, representing the eternal and infinite nature of Lord Shiva. The name "Mahakal" means "Lord of Time and Death," signifying Shiva's role as the destroyer of evil and the granter of liberation (moksha).

According to legend, the temple was established by Lord Shiva himself after defeating the demon Dushan. Ujjain, also known as Avanti, has been a major spiritual and astronomical center since ancient times.
