About Omkareshwar

Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the twelve most sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva in India. The temple is uniquely located on Mandhata Island (also called Shivapuri) in the Narmada River, Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh.

The island is shaped like the sacred Om (ॐ) symbol, making it spiritually significant. The name "Omkareshwar" means "Lord of Om," and it is believed that worshipping here brings peace, prosperity, and liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

According to legend, the Vindhya mountain once doubted Lord Shiva's supremacy. To prove his devotion, Vindhya performed intense penance here for six months. Pleased by his devotion, Lord Shiva manifested as a Jyotirlinga and blessed Vindhya. The temple also has a unique feature - it houses two Jyotirlingas: Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar (on the southern bank of Narmada).

The temple architecture showcases a blend of Rajput and Maratha styles, with beautiful carvings and a serene atmosphere enhanced by the flowing Narmada River.
